Project Proposal

Audience

My target audience will primarily be urban communities being affected by the environmental injustice and food injustice issues I cover on my website. These communities will have a diverse age range, but will statistically be members of historically marginalized groups in the United States. They are likely aware of the problems that I am discussing, but may not have made the time to address these issues, or fully realized that there are community steps that can be taken to increase resilience and directly address food security without having to wait for top-down solutions.

Purpose

I would like to demonstrate that a community action is an effective form of combating environmental injustice and that communities that feel they have been unheard of or cannot efficiently engage their legislatures should consider bottom-up solutions to combat food system inequities.  The most difficult part of this task will be convincing the audience that this is not a measure that will happen on its own or something that only works in certain places, rather it's something that they can participate in and begin implementing themselves.

Text (and other media content)

I will include a short informative essay with figures on community gardens and their benefits, as well as other short writings that demonstrate what systemic issues they combat. I would also include videos and images of communities that have built and implemented public gardens. Throughout the pages, I would like to include relevant graphics and figures, i.e. rates of food insecurity in urban areas in the section of the website discussing systemic issues.

Setting

Ideally, I would like this to circulate as a linked resource on social media pages and blogs that discuss ways to combat environmental issues. I would like to primarily reach my target audience through these ways, as they would likely follow accounts that cover alternative sustainability solutions.
