Do Agriculture

What is Sustainable Agriculture?

Sustainable urban agriculture refers to the practice of growing food in cities using environmentally-friendly methods that promote long-term soil health, biodiversity, and resource conservation. It is important because it offers a way to increase food resilience in urban areas, where fresh and healthy food is often hard to come by. Sustainable urban agriculture promotes community building, education, and empowerment, allowing individuals and communities to take control of their own food production and make healthier and more sustainable food choices. Additionally, sustainable urban agriculture contributes to a more sustainable and resilient food system by reducing the environmental impact of agriculture, improving local food security, and increasing access to healthy and affordable food options.

Our blog has several guides that can help you learn more or get started on your own local project!

Where to start

Although there is no "one size fits all" guide to starting sustainable agriculture, there are some core values and ideas that help make the navigating the process easier and approachable.

Start Simple

Handling these issues can be daunting, but starting small can help manage the task more manageable! You can start an at-home garden, join an existing advocacy group, or simply continue to educate yourself on ways to increase food resiliency! You've already begun the first steps to contributing towards a more sustainable future.

Build a Community

Handling these tasks is not something you have to do alone. Fostering a welcoming and inclusive community goes a long way, even in small ways. The easiest thing to do would be to join a pre-existing group, but you may have to be the trailblazer yourself! Consider starting a food-sharing group to focus on the community aspect. Bigger agricultural projects can come later.

Educate

Urban Agriculture is unique, and farmers need to understand the challenges and opportunities specific to the urban environment. By educating themselves on topics like soil health, composting, pest management, and irrigation, farmers can make informed decisions that lead to healthier crops, better yields, and increased profits. Additionally, education can help urban farmers connect with the community and build relationships with other farmers and organizations, leading to opportunities for collaboration and growth. Ultimately, education is the foundation for successful urban farming and is essential to creating a resilient and sustainable food system.

Be inclusive

Remember that a big reason that the global food system falls short today is a lack of an equitable framework. Today, we produce enough food to feed everyone on the planet, yet 821 million people are still considered to be "chronically malnourished" worldwide. A truly resilient food system is one that aims to serve all members of its community.
